Technology and Mental Health

Technology is influencing our life more and more every day. A reflection on how our relationship with technology has evolved over recent years is more than appropriate. Since the beginning of my lifetime, also the beginning of the 21st century, something as simple as the cell phone transformed from only being used to make phone calls to a device that is not just used, but necessary in everyday life for billions of people around the world. It has gotten to the point where the majority of people’s daily interactions with others is through some form of technology.
This is where social media comes in. An issue that isn’t so popular to talk about nowadays is all of the negative implications that technology has had on us. According to a study done by the Pew Research Center, 81% of Americans own a smartphone, and of smartphone holders, 72% have some form of social media. The problem with social media stems from the idea that it is bad for one’s mental health, especially in developing minds. Social media has proven to be a main contributor of stress and anxiety in adolescence.

I wholeheartedly agree with the idea. In my opinion, the reason that social media causes so much stress is that it makes people constantly compare themselves to others, and being that most social media users only show themselves in their best light, it is a recipe for disaster. People constantly feel like they have to prove themselves and worry about numbers of followers and likes endlessly. People want to be seen as perfect and that is inherently impossible.
