Rate My Society

“Nosedive” is about ratings and status in society, which can be directly correlated to social media in our contemporary world. Especially in Generation X, it is evident that how many followers one has, or how many likes a picture gets, is an important aspect in a teenager’s life. On social media, the more followers and likes you have, the more status you have. For example, if you have hundreds of thousands of followers on social media you receive perks, like free clothes and accessories to promote. People strive to have status in society because everyone wants to have friends and be well liked. “Nosedive” wants us to examine if it is really important to have all of these friends and is it fair that the more liked you are, the more perks you receive. For example, when Lacie went to buy a plane ticket she fought with the flight attendant and her rating went down. Since she no longer had status, she had to drive a car to her destination. In the current world we live in, people that have status are more entitled to certain perks, for example, a free first class plane ticket upgrade. Another example of this is the celebrities that get the free Chipotle for a year. The creators land on these questions because social media has such an impact on today’s society.

Another aspect of society that “Nosedive” is wanting us to examine is the fact that people can just hide behind a screen and speak their mind but would never say something cruel to them in person, or they do nothing at all. In “Nosedive” people have conversations with one another and then when they walk away they rate them, also, when one person gave a bad rating, everyone else followed and did the same. For example, when the guy could not get into work because people gave him a bad rating, Lacie gave him a and rating as well so her stars would not go down. This is equivalent to bystanders in today’s society. People do not want to get involved and just do what the majority does so they are not looked down upon in a negative way. In the current world everyone can just speak their mind when they are behind a screen and cyber-bullying has become a pressing issue in today’s society. Realizing how bad cyber-bullying and by standing is imperative which could be why the authors incorporate it into the film.
