Drafting the Constitution

In 2004, President Bush pushed for an amendment to the constitution that would define marriage as strictly between a man and a woman. The Process to amend the constitution is land and rigorous, and this is how it was supposed to be when it was created.
The framers drafted the constitution the way that they did in order to establish and protect the fundamental values of Americans: liberty, equality and justice. (We the People) In order to protect these values, the farmers deeply embedded them within the constitution and made it very difficult to amend (or change) so that these liberties could not be easily amended away. This is the result of long standing British political traditions mixed with the experiences of the colonists. Because of this mixture, the American political system is comprised of a federal government with smaller state governments that all have a say in the federal. This comes from the idea of “No taxation without representation.” and that the federal government should not be able to make decisions that affect every state without the state at least being able to vote on it first. The constitution creates a system of checks and balances, which protects against tyranny of any branch over the others. The effects of this system can be clearly seen in American politics today when government tries to pass new laws. A bill must first go through congress, be passed to the president, signed by the president and then be passed by the judicial branch as well. This process is painstaking and extremely inefficient, but it was made to be that way to protect the original American values. The American political system would be indirect contrast to the government of a country like China, where a small central government has total power over the entire country and (almost) all of its regions. The Chinese government doesn’t need to pass through roadblocks such as checks and balances, which makes the government much more efficient. However, with an extremely authoritarian government such as this, decisions made are not always in the best interest of the people. Much of China is in extreme poverty and with so few manufacturing regulations, China is the world’s largest contributor to the Earth’s pollution. The Constitution was specifically crafted in an effort to prevent the tyranny of a government over its people and even though it makes for a very inefficient system of passing laws, it does as it is supposed to do when protecting the values of Americans.
